I love sunsets. I love it when shafts of light pour through the clouds. I love watching it all unfold before me, the colors changing, the light shifting. Besides the obvious artistic beauty of a sunset the reason why I love sunsets so much though is because of the many spiritual truths a sunset reminds me of.

When I see a beautiful sunset I’m reminded of the love that our Heavenly Father has for us. He created this beautiful world for us to enjoy because he loves us. Which then cements my testimony that we are ALL children of God.

I’m reminded of the beauty of the Gospel and the light and happiness it brings. “Which light proceedeth forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space—The light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed, even the power of God who sitteth upon his throne” (D&C 88:12-13).
It also is a ray of hope through the sometimes dark clouds of trial. I really liked this quote from Jeffrey R. Holland-“There is help. There is happiness. There really is light at the end of the tunnel. It is the Light of the World, the Bright and Morning Star, the “light that is endless, that can never be darkened.” It is the very Son of God Himself. It is the return of hope, and Jesus is the Sun. To any who may be struggling to see that light and find that hope, I say: Hold on. Keep trying. God loves you. Things will improve.”
It was only a minute or two that I paused to look at the sunset last night as I took out the garbage. But it was only that little moment I needed to feel all those things. I think we all need to take a moment out of our busy lives to reflect on the really important things, whether it’s watching a sunset, taking a walk, playing with our kids, and as dumb as it sounds…taking the time to stop and smell the roses. I’m thankful for times like that. My testimony grows more each time I do.
